Loft Artists: A Matter of Size

This past Sunday, I explored the current exhibit at the Loft Artists Association in Stamford, Connecticut A Matter of Size. The exhibit showcases artwork ranging from the small and portable vs. large and imposing. The artwork is juxtaposed on the wall, featuring black and white, vibrant colors, intriguing abstracts, ingenious yet “cheeky” mixed-media works, and breathtaking travel photography.

I had the opportunity to speak with exhibiting abstract artist Alana Rockland-Kogan whose earlier painting from her Transitions series, pictured below, was created with layered acrylics in jewel-tones. The lines of built-up texture converge into a flower design. Mark Macrides who typically works in small, vibrant mixed-media collage, features his large structured, cool and geometric Seascape Triptych, pictured above.

Erica Stoller’s cardboard wall sculpture is a more, portable size that resembles a fan. Anna Kuchel-Rabinowitz adds some delightful kitsch with her faux-fur framed Tommy. Anna is known for using unique materials. The creepy paperdoll with spikes against a collage read and blue background stimulates the viewer’s imagination. Veronica Calomarde includes a rich, warm and contempoary abstract Radiance.

Soledad Bence, whose large paintings composed of curved brushstrokes filling the entire canvas, she leaves gray space on the bottom and top of the canvas in Beyond the Tales, pictured below. The red, white, and blue is symbolic and striking. A Matter of Size demonstrates there is impactful and intriguing artwork in all sizes.
