Black White and Shades of Gray is back!
On Sunday, I spent time with Gallery Operations Manager Casey Correa of Stamford Art Association while she was hanging Black White and Shades of Gray, opening Thursday February 19th at the Townhouse Gallery at 39 Franklin Street from 5:30-7pm. The Juror and fellow Cranbrook Kingswood Alumna travel photographer Sally Harris returns this year to select a diverse and captivating exhibit. What I always enjoy most about this show is the diverse subject matter, interpretations of the theme, and media types. Gallery hours are 12-3 pm Friday-Sunday. The exhibit may also be viewed virtually on the SAA Website.
New Life, a mixed-media sculpture in plexiglass (top photo) by Artist Marlene Siff and last year’s 1st prize winner, is a 3D scuplture enclosed in plexiglass. Photographer Matthew Gray’s Grain Silo in Winter looks like a charcoal or pastel drawing. However, the artwork is a photograph. The composition of shapes demonstrates the interplay of shadows on an industrial/agricultural object capturing the beauty. Tatyana Kulartne’s Monocrome II (below) part of a fiber art triptych crafted from natural cotton, “explor[es] rhythm, contrast, and the quiet drama of black and white…invit[es] viewers to experience texture, balance, and visual tension.” Tatyana recently exhibited her neutral fiber art in the Stamford Art Association Member Show. This is where I was first introduced to her artwork. Reviews of Black White and Shades of Gray are now on my Art Critic in 1 Minute Series Channel.
