Becoming Exhibit and Haitian Heritage Month at 203 Art Space

Artist and Curator Jean Benoit founded the 203 Art Space in the Stamford Town Center, transforming an old clothing store into an art gallery. The current exhibit Becoming is on view through the end of June extending the celebration of Haitian Heritage Month. The exhibit is a group show featuring an incredible and talented roster of regional, local, and Haitian artists.

The show includes accessibly priced metal wall sculptures by Haitian artists priced under $100 and paintings of all sizes. I am loving Jean’s painting Soul Fire. The imagery reminds me an ethereal Nefertiti.
I was introduced to the artwork of tattoo artist and painter George Perham at the St. Philip’s Artists’ Guild. The dark cool color and elements in nature are intriguing! His untitled artwork below is adorned with a beautiful vintage frame. The imagery possesses an Old Masters style. His artwork is very portably sized for those with limited wall space.

Another artist who is exhibiting multiple paintings in the show is Looketha. Her artwork is surrealistic, and since I tend to gravitate towards artworks painted in warmer hues, loose company captured my attention from across the gallery. To see all of the faces and elements of the painting, I have to view it multiple times. The human and animal faces are delightfully gruesome. Do you remember the movie Labyrinth? This is what I think when I view this artwork.

I am excited to see Frank Maco’s soulful portraiture in Becoming. Happy Hour features a forlorn woman who perhaps had a long day at work received bad news or was stood up. The brushtrokes and use of color to depict emotions is what I enjoy must about his paintings.
